APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAMME

Our apprentice programme combines in-house and college-based learning with on-the-job training and mentoring

CLESHAR IS INCLUDED IN THE GOVERNMENT'S APPRENTICESHIP LEVY AND USES THIS FUNDING STREAM TO SUPPORT ITS LEARNING AND DEVELOPMENT THROUGH APPRENTICESHIPS.

We also hold free Skills Bootcamps, forming part of the Government-funded Plan for Jobs initiative, which provide people with the opportunity to build up rail sector skills. Since introducing our four-week Skills Bootcamps in January 2022, we have seen 40 people take part. All completed the training and were offered positions within Cleshar, half of which accepted, deciding to continue their career ambitions within the rail industry. Our apprenticeship programme has been running for over 10 years with college-based learning undertaken in partnership with the College of Haringey and North East London (CONEL), South Bank University, the University of West London, the University of Portsmouth and the Educationwise Academy.

Ninety per cent of our apprentices are recruited through national, industry, client and community work programmes aimed at improving education outcomes and training opportunities. We inspire individuals from under-represented groups to apply for apprenticeships and create opportunities that enable them to take their first steps into the employment market. We are also committed to the rehabilitation of ex-offenders into the workplace.

To date, Cleshar has trained over 100 apprentices, many of whom have gone onto further studies and promotion within the business.

Cleshar offers for those aged 16 or over the following apprenticeships which, on average, last 12 to 18 months, and which lead to Level 2 and Level 3 National Vocational Qualifications (NVQs):

  • Rail/track engineering and maintenance
  • Signalling and telecoms
  • Civil engineering
  • Chartered surveying
  • Risk and safety management (L7)
  • Senior leader (L7)
  • Supply chain warehouse operative
  • Human Resources
  • Business administration
