Providing health monitoring and support for our workforce

We monitor the health of our people at all stages of employment with CCS, including pre-employment, during employment, and on return to work - following period of absence. As well as utilising health questionnaires, we retain the services of an Occupational Health provider for specialist occupational health knowledge and monitoring.

We support members of staff returning to work after a long absence, taking into consideration any adjustments to their work routine or environment.

Through our case - by - case management approach, our aim is to enable our people to stay in work.

HEALTH

Managing our in-house drugs and alcohol testing programme

CCS is committed to maintaining a working environment free from drug and alcohol abuse, and to promoting wellbeing and a healthy lifestyle. Our Drugs and Alcohol (D&A) Policy complies with rail industry standards.

CCS has its own digital oral swab equipment for drugs tests and breathalyser for alcohol test, authorised for use on Transport for London's infrastructure. We have staff trained to use this mobile technology for pre-employment, safety critical and unannounced testing. We have on-call access to 'for cause' and 'post incident' testing through approved external specialists.

As part of our D&A management programme, we assess all declared medication, both prescription and over the counter, to ensure our people are fit to work safely.

We require all our supply chain partners to hold a compliant D&A Policy.

HEALTH

Improving mental health and wellbeing

Good mental health is key to the wellbeing of our workforce. We are committed to create a culture focused on prevention and providing support to facilitate early intervention to minimise any detrimental impact on those affected if concerns are identified.

Positive steps we are taking to change the way people think about and manage mental health include:

  • Mental health first aid training, including recognition of the signs of mental health issues in work colleagues.
  • The appointment of internal mental health first aiders, providing an informal network for those seeking help or support.
  • Regular briefings and tool-box talks on the mental health issues we face as a business and industry.
  • A bespoke 24/7 Employee Assistance Programme through 'Care first'. It provides individuals and managers with access to support, information, advice, and programmes which tackle common problems such as stress management, bullying and work life balance.

Appreciation of the importance of good mental health and wellbeing has been heightened by the COVID-19 pandemic, it's aftermath and its continual threat to our future health.

During the pandemic, we embraced online technology to maintain regular communication and ensure inclusivity across our workforce. We continue to take lessons learnt from this experience to inform our business continuity strategy and, above all, to minimise infection and keep our people safe and well.

Appreciation of the importance of good mental health and wellbeing has been heightened by the COVID-19 pandemic, its aftermath and its continual threat to our future health.

In line with government guidance and our clients’ own control measures, we prepared COVID risk assessments and guidance for our workforce and introduced COVID monitoring programmes which, while involving less direct interaction with our site teams, included regular COVID compliant site observations to ensure that the appropriate arrangements were fully implemented and followed. As a business, we fully support vaccination uptake, and this message has been conveyed through our briefings and tool box talks.

During the pandemic, we embraced online technology to maintain regular communication and ensure inclusivity across our workforce. We continue to take the lessons learnt from this experience to inform our business continuity strategy and, above all, to minimise infection and keep our people safe and well.
