Cleshar delegates undertake Transport for London Track Operatives Training

Twelve delegates, who recently joined Cleshar to work on the London Underground/Transport for London Tracks for our clients’ Asset Performance & Capital Delivery (AO & TDU) Programme, recently undertook a two-week course of training.

This consisted of a week’s safety and theoretical training at our head office classrooms, with tool training being delivered on our training track.

The second week saw them receive practical training, undertaking maintenance works and re-railing works along with reconditioning works installing Delkor base plates. During the final week, the client met the delegates, this gave them the opportunity to ask the client questions and gave the clients the chance to experience how we prepare our new employees.

The delegates had to sign in as they would have at the station access point. They also completed the Person in Charge Evacuation Register (PICER) form, receiving both a safety briefing from the PWT Supervisor and a briefing around evacuation procedures.

The course gave the learners insight into work practices including:

  • Watching the PWT log out with the TAC
  • Taking the road (a pretend phone call for training purposes), so they get to understand how critical that part of the process is. They get told the call back time and receive a works briefing and then the team is divided up into work activities.

We have a full-time trainer from our training academy, an experienced operations manager and an experienced PWT supervisor who take the learners through the various work activities and teach them how to work as a team. They all learned the importance of delivering quality work and finishing on time before call back. They also got to see real site documents (i.e., method statements, risk assessments, programmes of works and storage licences which provide insight into how things are planned and prepared).

We look forward to seeing our learners develop into experienced track engineers and as supervisors delivering similar training courses in the future.
