Project Overview

As part of London Tramlink’s investment programme to increase capacity on the busiest section of the tram network between Arena & Therapia Lane, six additional new trams were planned to be introduced. Cleshar were appointed as the design & build contractor for the construction of a new passing loop comprising 150m of track at Elmers End, to facilitate the new rolling stock and a new Line 4 Route timetable.

The works comprised the conversion of an existing cripple siding, located on the Elmers End line approximately 130m west of Elmers End Tram Stop. The passing loop allows trams to pass each other on the single track branch line. The design & build works were carried out with Cleshar employed to complete all elements, with the works being based on a Performance Specification provided by London Tramlink.

• Installation of two new sprung points machines

Overhead Line Equipment works carried out are summarised as follows:

Innovations

The programme demanded that the procurement of the long lead items had to be carried out, prior to the completion of the detailed design, and this involved taking calculated risks, based on our experience in doing this type of work. We worked closely with the London Tramlink and took full advantage with them of exploring the most cost effective, expedient & least disruptive options to deliver the project.

Benefits / Project Outcome

All of the site works were programmed to be undertaken within an extended weekend possession, together with a ten-day blockade of the mainline to install & commission the new track layout. We also worked to facilitate the Tramlink Signals Team, to allow the new layout to be fully commissioning prior to it becoming fully operational and being put into service. The Project was successfully completed on time & within the overall budget.
